ATTENDING A COURSE

What is the minimum age for Course?

To attend a level 1 training course you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old. Snowsport England is currently developing a special course for younger club members.

I turn 16 during the course can I attend?

You can attend a level 1 training course as long as you are at least 15 years and 9 months old

What level of first aid course do I need to take for this course?

For coaches and instructors licenced to operate only in a closed environment [dry slopes and indoor snow slopes] the minimum course is a 3 hour first aid awareness course. For those who are licenced to operate in mountains a 3 day first aid in the workplace course is required. We strongly suggest that this is a course designed for those operating in an outdoor environment.

Are there any other requirements to attend the training course?

Check the individual award page.

In the case of development awards beyond level 1 you will need to have completed the level below the course you want to attend or have been granted equivalence.

In the case of UKCP performance awards beyond level 1 you will need to have completed trainee status at the level below the course you want to attend or have been granted equivalence.

How can I find out where a course is running?

BECOMING LICENCED

What documents need to be sent to the SSE office to complete my Award and receive a licence?

You will need to show that you:

  • Are currently registered with SSE
  • Hold an appropriate first aid certificate
  • Have completed a safeguarding course
  • Have a CRB/Disclosure check
  • Have attended the appropriate training course
  • Have passed the appropriate examination

FINANCIAL HELP

Are there any grants available to help me attend a course?

Yes there are, though there can be a number of conditions attached to grants and bursaries and they are not available in all circumstances. Usually you will need to apply via your club and show that you are actively coaching in your club and have their support.

You can ask your club to fill out a Small Grants application on our behalf here.

In the first instance please contact your club who can work with the development team at Snowsport England.

KEEPING MY LICENCE UP TO DATE

How often do I need to refresh my qualification?

As an instructor or coach you need to refresh your award every three years.?

How often do I need to take a First Aid course?

That depends on your first aid certificate. To hold a licence you need to hold a current first aid certificate.

How often do I need to take a Safeguarding Course?

Usually every three years

CHILD PROTECTION

How often do I need to take a Safeguarding Course?

Usually every three years

CRB (DBS) Why do I need another one – I have one with another organisation?

We take child protection seriously. The current advice that we, and other governing bodies have been given is that each awarding body ought to have it’s own CRB.

CRB (DBS) I have one with BASI can I use this?

Yes, because we jointly deliver some awards. You will need to complete a separate form to authorise BASI to share this information.

EQUIVALENCY

I have a non Snowsport England Qualification, how do I apply for equivalency?

As a member of the international snowsports community Snowsport England welcomes coaches, leaders and instructors holding qualifications issued by non UK Snowsports Member Awarding Bodies. Holders of such qualifications can apply for recognition of equivalency of their awards. If successful an applicant will be awarded the appropriate level of qualification and licence and will receive all usual member benefits.

OTHER QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED

How many people can I teach/instruct/coach in a group?

There is no simple answer to this. As an instructor you need to make a judgement as to the needs of your skiers. Some skiers require 1 instructor to 1 student, in other cases you will of course be able to work with more skiers. It would be very unusual for it to be appropriate for you to teach more than 12-13 skiers at one time.

I want to become a Ski Host - can I take one of your courses to do this?

No. We do not licence ski hosts.
