Chair's Award presented at Snowsport England AGM 2018

This week the 38th Snowsport England AGM took place in Loughborough, and part of the meeting was devoted to the presentation of Chair Awards.

This year, Mary and Peter Calvert were presented the Chair Awards as recognition for their hard work in the sport, that they've been involved in for around 20 years. Peter effectively retired from racing almost 10 years ago, but they still contribute an enormous amount to the sport regionally and nationally.

Mary was the Snowsport South secretary for many years and when this role evolved into race administrator Mary took on the job of processing the race entries for the Snowsport South summer series, dealing with any queries that arose and then worked as chief timekeeper at nearly every event.  A few years ago Mary took up the post of secretary for the Alpine Committee, a role she still holds today. Anyone involved to any degree with the organisation of racing with Snowsport South will know that for many years Mary has been the backbone of the region and she has made a considerable contribution to the success of the region.

Peter is much less visible but his contribution to the success of our region and of others is perhaps even greater than Mary’s. While still at school Peter created the excellent and completely under advertised skiresults.co.uk website. When the Snowsport South committee disintegrated the existing race organisation structure was left in tatters and Peter built a completely new system.  Along with sorting out online entry and payments Peter created a timekeeping and results application which has made the running of regional races considerably more efficient, particularly when it comes to organising teams, and this application has also been taken on by LSERSA who have realised significant improvements in the way their races run. Around three years ago Peter developed a system where the results are displayed online enabling those not at the race to track the progress of the event. He has also developed a system for dual slalom for Cambridge University and the region and is currently looking at modifying this for use in “City Event”  style dual slalom races.

We'd like to say a big thank you to Mary and Peter for their efforts over the years.

As well as the volunteers that help out in regions, clubs and committees, there are also the Non Executive Directors who voluntarily sit on the Snowsport England Board of Directors. This year, we welcome Simon Levene, Natalie Dunman, Crispin Vitoria, Morwenna Angove, and James Nickson onto the Board, and we're looking forward to working together. However this means saying goodbye to Bryan Thomas, Stuart Maclean and Alison Eyre - who we'd like to say a big thank you to for all their involvement over the past few years. In particular, a huge thank you to Bryan Thomas for his dedication and enthusiasm in not only his role as Finance Director, but  also in the way he has helped across the organisation in many different roles.

If you have any stories of volunteers that you think deserve credit and recognition we'd love you to send them in to gareth@snowsportengland.org.uk so we can share them accordingly.
