A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SKIING

Welcome to Snowsport England’s guide to skiing — your starting point for discovering how you can learn, improve, connect and enjoy skiing right here in England.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an intermediate skier looking to progress your skills or just join a community of likeminded people, we’re here to help you make the most of snowsports opportunities at home.

WHAT IS SKIING?

Skiing is all about enjoying the sport for fun, fitness and lifelong engagement -not solely competition.

It includes everything from your first ever turn on skis to regular sessions at artificial slopes, dry slopes, or with a local ski club. You don’t need snow on the ground here in England to get involved - our clubs and facilities make skiing possible all year round.

Skiing is a great activity for all ages and abilities. It improves balance, strength and confidence, and offers a fantastic way to make new friends and be active throughout the year.

WHAT equipment and clothing do i need to ski in england?

To start skiing at indoor or dry slope venues, you’ll need basic ski equipment and clothing. Most slopes offer hire equipment, so you don’t need to buy anything straight away:

Essential Equipment

  • Skis, boots and bindings - usually available for hire.

  • Helmet - important for safety (often included with hire).

  • Poles - if you’ve reached the point of needing them.

Clothing

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers - to keep you dry and warm.

  • Base layers - breathable layers to keep you cosy.

  • Gloves and warm socks - essential for comfort and to prevent injury.

If you’re heading to an outdoor dry slope, you don’t need to wear waterproof jacket and trousers (unless the weather looks wet!). Instead we recommended a long-sleeved top/jumper (essential) and comfortable trousers, like tracksuit bottoms.

WHERE CAN I LEARN TO ski IN ENGLAND?

England has a network of more than 120 clubs and facilities where you can start or continue your skiing journey.

Indoor Snow Centres

Here’s where you can learn:

These indoor facilities offer year-round lessons on real snow slopes — a perfect environment for beginners to get comfortable on skis before a holiday abroad, as well as intermediates and advanced skiers to improve their skills.

There are five indoor snow centres in England:

The Snow Centre Hemel Hempstead
The Snow Centre Manchester
SnowDome in Tamworth
Snozone in Milton Keynes
Snozone in Castleford

Dry Slopes

Dry slopes are hills which are covered with an artificial surface that imitates snow. This allows skiers to ride in all weather conditions throughout the year. Dry slopes, like indoor snow centres, use conveyor belt-style lifts or tow bars to give skiers access to the top of the hill. You can take lessons and attend coaching sessions at dry slopes.

Many of these facilities have snowsports clubs on-site. Clubs are a great way to learn and improve in a social environment; coaching sessions, group activities and even regular trips abroad are common. Clubs in England cover all disciplines including alpine, freestyle, nordic and more.

can i progress my skills IN ENGLAND?
