Snowsport England carries out DBS checks for coaches, instructors, welfare officers and many more roles.
We only issue enhanced DBS checks, which is the most thorough criminal record check available in the UK. This helps ensure you are suitable for working with children and/or vulnerable adults.
WHO NEEDS A DBS?
Below, you will find a list of the roles that require a DBS check:
• Coaches and instructors
• Welfare officers
• Photographers and videographers
• Academy staff (teachers, house parents, etc.)
• Physiotherapists and other medical staff
• Team managers who are responsible for unaccompanied children
• Minibus driver
Please note: this list is not exclusive. For more details on which regulated activities require a DBS, please see this regulated activity flow diagram.
If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to email dbs@snowsportengland.org.uk.
If you are in a paid role, a DBS certificate currently costs £49.50. There are two options for identity checks – either a digital check (free) or via the Post Office (additional £8.22). This brings to the total cost to £57.72.
If you are a volunteer, a DBS certificate and identity check is free. Snowsport England value the time and effort volunteers give to our sports, so we absorb this cost.

Please do not be put off applying because of a criminal record.
When you apply for your DBS, you will be given the opportunity to declare your criminal record and if you do, Snowsport England will contact you about this. All cautions, convictions, reprimands or warnings should be disclosed unless they have been “Filtered” in line with current guidance.
Once the disclosure is issued you will be asked to send it to us, it will be risk assessed and a decision will be made. The risk assessment will be informed by a combination of factors including: when the offence was committed; type of the offence; how many offences; how old you were at the time; does it suggest you may not be suitable to work with children etc.
If you want to discuss a criminal record, or whether your criminal record may now be filtered, contact Mark, the Safeguarding Lead.
Snowsport England has a policy for the recruitment of ex-offenders and complies with the DBS Code of Practice. -
If you do not have a UK address or are unable to apply for a DBS check, you may need to provide an alternative criminal record check.
