From autumn trails to winter slopes in Slovakia’s High Tatras

Think the mountain summer ends in August? Think again.

September and October are among the best months to explore Slovakia’s High Tatras on foot. Cooler temperatures create excellent hiking conditions, the trails are generally quieter and the changing autumn colours give the mountain landscape a completely different character.

The summer hiking season continues until the end of October, offering plenty of time to discover dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, waterfalls and cosy mountain huts. Whether you prefer a gentle scenic walk or a more demanding day in the mountains, the compact High Tatras region offers routes for different abilities and plenty to experience during a short break.

It’s easy to see why the Tatras was named the Best Hidden Gem Region in Europe at the Travelbook Awards 2025 - spectacular scenery, authentic hospitality, spa retreats and excellent value for money are just a few of the reasons you should visit

And then winter takes over

When the summer hiking trails close at the end of October, preparations for the upcoming ski season begin. The landscape soon transforms into a winter destination for skiers and snowboarders.

The main ski areas - Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec - offer a variety of slopes, suitable for families and beginners as well as advanced riders.

Tatranská Lomnica is known for its dramatic high-mountain setting and skiing beneath Lomnický štít. Štrbské Pleso combines downhill skiing with excellent cross-country opportunities and a classic winter-resort atmosphere, while Starý Smokovec is ideal for families, beginners and visitors looking to combine skiing with other mountain experiences.

Beyond the pistes

· Cross-country skiing through snowy landscapes

· Winter walks and snowshoeing

· Sledging and family activities

· Cable-car trips with spectacular mountain views

· Cosy mountain huts and traditional Slovak cuisine

· Wellness and thermal-water relaxation after a day outdoors

The High Tatras provide an attractive alternative to the larger Alpine resorts: compact, authentic, welcoming and filled with varied experiences both on and off the slopes. Everything is close together, making it easy to combine skiing with winter nature, gastronomy and relaxation.
