safeguarding training
Safeguarding training is a mandatory requirement for all Snowsport England coaches, instructors, welfare officers and volunteers involved in coaching activity.
We want everyone to be aware of good safeguarding practice to help them offer the best, happiest and safest environment and experience for children, young people and adults.
Safeguarding training is required for:
Coaches
Instructors
Volunteers involved in coaching activity
Welfare officers
If you have a coach or instructor licence, you must complete approved safeguarding training, refresh it every three years and upload your certificate to Sport:80.
WHO NEEDS SAFEGUARDING TRAINING?
COACHES & INSTRUCTORS: first-time training
If it is your first time completing a safeguarding course, please see the options below.
if you’re AGED 18 or over
You must complete the following course:
UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children
- online classroom course
Please note: this is the only online classroom course we will accept if it is your first course. It is valid for three years.
if you’re under 18 YEARS-OLD
You must complete the following course:
UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children for Young Coaches - online classroom course
Please note: this is valid for 1 year or until 6 months after your 18th birthday
COACHES & INSTRUCTORS: SAFEGUARDING renewal
Safeguarding must be renewed every 3 years.
You must complete the following course:
UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children Renewal
- online course
OR
An approved equivalent safeguarding training. For example. a safeguarding course delivered by another national governing body (e.g. football, tennis, etc.) Please email welfare@snowsportengland.org.uk to confirm if an alternative is acceptable.
Important renewal rules
- Online renewal is only accepted if completed within 1 month of the expiry of your full SPC course
- If more than 1 month has passed, you must complete the full course again
- Renewal courses cannot be taken consecutively
- After completing a renewal course, your next update must be the full Safeguarding & Protecting Children course
WELFARE OFFICERS
WELFARE OFFICERS WORKING WITH CHILDREN
You need to attend two courses. These are:
UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children
- online classroom course
AND
UK Coaching Time To Listen
- online classroom course
Please note: This is valid for three years
Alternatively, instead of the UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children course, we can accept an approved equivalent safeguarding training. For example. a safeguarding course delivered by another national governing body (e.g. football, tennis, etc.) Please email welfare@snowsportengland.org.uk to confirm if an alternative is acceptable.
WELFARE OFFICERS WORKING WITH OVER 18s ONLY
You need to attend two courses. These are:
UK Coaching Safeguarding Adults
- online classroom course
AND
UK Coaching Time To Listen
- online classroom course

GENERAL SAFEGUARDING COURSES
We want to encourage as many people as possible within snowsports to gain an understanding of safeguarding. The more people who understand it, the safer all of our participants will be.

Ann Craft Trust Safeguarding Adults in Sport
NSPCC Sport Webinars - on a variety of topics including tackling bullying, keeping children safe online, information sharing in child protection cases, safeguarding LGBT young people and understanding grooming for abuse.

SAFEGUARDING TRAINING faqs

Yes. All coaches and instructors must complete approved safeguarding training to hold a Snowsport England licence.

Snowsport England requires UK Coaching Safeguarding & Protecting Children training because it is specifically designed for sport and coaching environments.
Following national guidance (including the Whyte Review), all sports are required to ensure safeguarding training is relevant to the context coaches work in.
Training from schools, workplaces, or other statutory agencies is not accepted, as it does not cover the sport-specific scenarios needed for coaching.

Safeguarding training is valid for 3 years. You must renew it before it expires to keep your licence active.

If your safeguarding training expires, your licence will no longer be valid until you complete and upload updated training.

Yes, safeguarding training from another national governing body (e.g. football, tennis) may be accepted, as long as it meets Snowsport England requirements. Please email welfare@snowsportengland.org.uk to confirm.

If you complete an online renewal more than one month after your full course expired, it will not be accepted, and you will need to complete the full course again.

No. Renewal courses cannot be taken consecutively. After completing a renewal course, your next update must be the full Safeguarding & Protecting Children course.
