Winter holidays in Slovakia’s High Tatras

Make your next winter escape about more than the ski day.

In Slovakia’s High Tatras, mornings on the pistes can give way to snowy forest walks, mountain-hut lunches, family sledging and evenings in warm pools beneath the peaks.

With modern mountain infrastructure and direct flights from the UK, this compact mountain region offers plenty for skiers, non-skiers and families travelling together.

There will be more skiing after dark, too. Lighting on two additional slopes will bring Jasná’s night-skiing offer to almost 6 km of illuminated runs, including the Snowpark.

On the southern side of Chopok, added snowmaking on route 34 is intended to improve conditions on the blue run from the summit.

Ride the Porsche chairlift at Štrbské Pleso

The recently introduced eight-seater Porsche chairlift to Medvedia kopa is a highlight at Štrbské Pleso. Heated seats, a modern boarding system and LEITNER DirectDrive technology bring added comfort to the journey uphill. The €11 million investment is a visible part of the resort’s continuing modernisation, pairing mountain scenery with contemporary lift infrastructure.

Across the High Tatras, modern chairlifts and gondolas, snowmaking systems, piste grooming and online Gopass booking help make the ski holiday easier to organise. At Štrbské Pleso, combine downhill skiing with cross-country skiing or a scenic walk around the lakeside resort.

Ski high in Tatranská Lomnica

For big mountain views and varied skiing, head to Tatranská Lomnica. The resort combines gentler lower pistes with more demanding terrain higher up, while experienced skiers can look to Lomnické sedlo at 2,190 metres when conditions allow. Ski schools and equipment hire make it easy for different abilities to enjoy the same holiday, from first turns to more adventurous days on the mountain.

A bigger Tatra Ice Dome this November

One of the region’s signature winter attractions returns to Hrebienok in November 2026. This winter’s Tatra Ice Dome will be bigger, created from 250 tonnes of ice. Add a visit to a day of mountain sightseeing, taking the funicular from Starý Smokovec and exploring the winter scenery around Hrebienok.

Welcome to the Tatras’ kingdom of wellness

After fresh mountain air, step into the warmth of the Tatras’ wellness offering. From hotel spas, saunas and restorative massages to the thermal pools and wellness facilities of AquaCity Poprad, there are plenty of ways to slow down. Pair an active morning with a relaxed afternoon, or build an entire winter break around good food, spa time and mountain views.

Fill your week with winter experiences

There is plenty to enjoy on a rest day or a holiday without skis:

·       Winter hiking on routes open in winter, including outings from Hrebienok towards Rainer’s Hut and the Studený potok waterfalls.

·       Guided snowshoe walks through snowy landscapes.

·       Sledding from Hrebienok to Starý Smokovec.

·       Cross-country skiing at Štrbské Pleso.

·       Ice skating at local winter rinks.

·       Scenic cable-car and funicular trips for mountain panoramas.

·       Guided ski touring for a different perspective on the mountains.

·       Mountain-hut stops, Slovak food, cosy cafés, spa visits and family time in warm pools.

Winter walks should follow routes open under the national park’s seasonal rules, with suitable equipment and plans adapted to current mountain conditions. Snow activities and lift operations depend on weather and snow cover.

Fly from the UK to the mountains
